How Fast Does a 70cc Dirt Bike Go?

How fast does a 70cc dirt bike go

A 70cc dirt bike is a lovely little machine for kids to ride and find thrill. But you may be concerned about your kid’s safety- in case they overspeed. Wisely, bikes have maximum speeds. So, how fast does a 70cc dirt bike go?

How Fast Does a 70cc Dirt Bike Go?

A 70cc dirt bike can go as fast as 50mph. The average maximum speed in the industry is a little lower, usually clocking at 35mph. However, those speeds are often theoretical since there are a number of factors that determine how fast a dirt bike would go in practice. Such factors include terrain, engine type, riding experience, and bike mass.

I’ll break down those factors next.

Terrain

Riding terrains are not made equal. Some may be pure sand, others may have pebbles in the sand. Still others may even be describes as a bit rocky.

The type of terrain where your kid rides their 70cc dirt bike plays a major role in how fast it will go. You’d agree that if the terrain was rocky, you’d want your child to be more careful.

Moreover, a rocky terrain obviosuly slows down a bike as against a smoother surface which would aid the bike peaking in speed quicker.

Therefore, even if the rated maximum speed of your dirt bike is 45mph, the terrain may keep the actual max speed at 30mph or lower!

Engine Type

The combustion mechanism of a dirt bike’s engine also affects its maximum speed. A dirt bike is either 2-stroke or 4-stroke combustion. Can you guess which would go faster?

If you’re guessed 2-stroke, you’re absolutely correct!

Two-stroke dirt bike engines are faster and reach maximum speed faster than their four-stroke counterparts. Wouldn’t it take longer to count from 1 to 4?

So it follows for combustion in bike engines. While a 4-stroke engine goes through four stages to complete one power stroke, a 2-stroke engine needs only two stages to complete one power stroke.

Hence, if you’re looking to push the speed limits, go for a two-stroke 70cc dirt bike.

Riding Experience

Do you remember your first day riding a bike? How fast did you go? I’m guessing not so fast!

But with experience came more speed! So it is with kids. The more experience they gain riding dirt bikes, the more comfortable they get pushing the bike to maximum speeds.

Even so, always keep an eye on your kids for the sake of safety!

Bike Mass

Finally, let’s talk about the bike’s mass. The lighter the bike, the faster it is!

Generally, bikes with 2-stroke engine are lighter than those with 4-stroke engine.

But have you ever wondered, what exactly does the “cc” in 70cc, 100c, 125cc mean?

What Does 70CC Mean on a Dirt Bike?

“CC” stands for cubic centimeter. And while you may see them more in relation to bikes, every machine with an internal combustion engine has a cubic centimeter, or cc.

Without going too deep into mechanical engineering , the cubic centimeter (cc) refers to the volume that is displaced or moved by the piston of a combustion engine. The larger the volume displced, the larger the space for fuel and air to mix and power the engine.

Look I don’t want to go that techy. Just know that the more the cc, the more the power output. And in turn, the more the speed. That’s why a 125cc dirt bike goes faster than a 70cc bike!

Final Thoughts

At least four factors affect how fast a 70cc dirt bike can go. They are riding terrain, bike mass, engine type and riding experience. However, theoretically, a 70cc dirt bike can attain 50mph.
